I'm always eager to read Ron Foster's latest book. Not only do his books keep you entertained, but you learn so much about survival techniques as well. It's always like a two-for-one deal with this author's books. I have to admit that this book scared me more than the others. Why? Because of the pandemic (among other catastrophes). To me, this is very plausible and possible. If we look throughout history we see that illnesses have spread wild and wiped out a great number of people. The Black Death that swept through Europe in the 14th century, the Spanish Flu in 1918 that killed more than 20 million people worldwide... The truth is, pandemics do occur and if you aren't prepared you'll simply become a victim.

In Driving Towards Disaster; Survival of the Best Prepared we get to see the situation through the eyes of an emergency responder. Imagine having the task of helping out yet trying to survive as well? Mix the pandemic in with a major hurricane and all hell is breaking loose in this book! But...as with each of Ron Foster's books, there is hope at the core of them. The main message is to be prepared (or perish).

I often think about how a pandemic would affect everyday life. If it got really bad it makes you wonder if you'd rather be one who succumbed to the disease or survived it yet had to live in a world of chaos and martial law. In Driving Towards Disaster: The Story Thus Far Ron Foster paints a very realistic picture of what would happen if the U.S. was faced with a pandemic and, to make matters worse, a deadly hurricane! What makes Ron Foster's book different from other "worst case scenario" or survival books like this is that it's from the viewpoint of a responder. Imagine having to be the one to be a first responder to such utter devastation. Yet through it all the author gives us hope and tosses in a satisfying amount of wit as well. Since I've begun reading Ron Foster's Preppers series, I haven't looked at life the same way since. What used to be seen as "must-haves" in my life are now viewed as only perks to living a relatively low-stress life. I can live without them if need be. What used to be seen as junk or trash, is now viewed with the eye of a prepper. Someone who fully intends to survive if there's ever a global catastrophe or breakdown of society. It's like adopting a MacGyver attitude. Plastic bags, cans, tubes, tarps, and other things we often toss out in the garbage can actually come in handy when you're trying to survive.

This book not only covers more methods of how to find food, water, shelter and protection during a worldwide cataclysm, but we get to meet the characters up close and personal. As with all of the author's books, he combines humor, adventure, and helpful hints. As a lover of nonfiction books, I find it to be a perfect blend. So what's the author trying to get across in the Prepper series? That as long as you're alive there's hope, so never, ever give up!

I love stories like this since I'm a prepper too. Or, as I call myself, "a laid-back survivalist." I grew up loving stories like Julie of the Wolves, Hatchet, Robinson Crusoe, and Swiss Family Robinson. What I enjoyed about Preppers Road March (Prepper Trilogy. is that it's got a good story with funny characters and solid prepping information and diagrams in the book. We get to travel along with David and see how he survives during a societal breakdown and ultimately finds his way back home. I found myself holding my breath more than once hoping his survivalist skills would see him through. I can't wait to read the others in the series. Not only am I being entertained, but I'm learning things too!

More importantly, the visual communication is accomplished on a large screen. Family and friends are able to display their images and videos directly on the TV. The DMP-BDT210 also features an easy to use and handy Auto Answering Video Message function. This is ideal for receiving messages when you are away from the Blu-ray player.

Free Vistaprint Business Cards Review

Image via CrunchBaseRecently I got an email from Vistaprint to get 250 business cards for free. I needed some new cards for my writing business so I figured I couldn't lose with this deal. Now, the cards aren't totally free. I had to pay about $5 for shipping and handling, which isn't bad. They have hundreds of templates to choose from and they cover a wide variety of business types; everything from landscaping and dentistry to massage therapy and childcare.

Their system is easy to use. Just choose the template you like and on the following screen you type in your information. It will show up on the template so you can see exactly what it will look like. After you have your card the way you like it you give it the okay and then go through several screens of special offers. I opted out of them all--I just wanted my free business cards.

About two weeks later they came in the mail. Here's what I did and didn't like about the Vistaprint free business cards:

Although the font looked really good on my computer screen, it was far too small when I got to see the cards in person. From now on I'll go to their screen that allows you to manipulate the text and fonts and make the writing bigger.

The free cards only came in matte finish and I didn't like how "washed out" they looked. It made them look very cheap too, like something I could print from my computer at home. If I opted for the glossy finish it would have been $10 more.

Every card has a white line down one side. I'm assuming it's from where the machine cut the cards.

"Vistaprint" is printed on the back. If I wanted a blank back it would have been more money.

Aside from these factors, for free business cards they were decent. However, I would definitely pay for the glossy next time. I probably won't use these cards since I need something more professional looking, but many people may find them suitable.

I often see specials where they offer the better business cards for $10 which include the glossy finish and a blank back. I'll wait until they're offering this again and get the nicer cards.

Dell Inspiron Netbook Review

Since I work from home all of my business is done on the computer. I prefer a netbook over a desktop PC or even a full sized laptop since I travel a lot and hate lugging around a bulky laptop. For a few years I had an HP Mini 1030 but it only had 15GB of memory. I found myself juggling files constantly and buying memory cards and flash drives to store the extra information. About two months ago I decided to buy a refurbished Dell Inspiron Mini 1012. It definitely has it's good points and a bad point.

What I like about the Dell Inspiron Netbook:

~It's a lot sturdier than the HP Mini I had. The keys are thicker and very tight and don't seem like they're going to fall off at any minute. (That's one problem I had with my HP) It's a bit heavier than the HP but that's okay. It seems like it's much better made than the other mini computer I had.

~It has 250GB of memory. Yay! No more juggling files around.

~The battery life is phenomenal. I've used it several times for over 6 hours and the battery still had 2 hours left on it.

~The screen is very clear and sharp. With the HP it seemed a bit "dull."

~It plays most games pretty well. I tend to purchase games from Big Fish Games or Popcap Games and none of these are too intense. Nothing like World of Warcraft or Call of Duty.

~The sound quality is average for a mini computer. When you plug in headphones though it's really good. On the HP it sounded awful no matter what.

~It comes with Windows 7 Starter edition which is fine for my needs. I noticed that the Wordpad program is even updated to where it works almost like a regular word processing program. On the HP is was very primitive.

~When I loaded my music onto the Dell it shows all the album covers. That's a nice little addition and something I didn't have with the HP.

~When I open and close the lid it feels good and tight. With the HP mini I had to constantly tighten the hinge screws since they'd come loose in less than a week.

My only complaint:

~It doesn't connect to the internet via wifi very well. Actually, it's quite frustrating. The HP mini stayed connected fine and was pretty fast. With the Dell Inspiron Mini I'll get "not responding" many times during the day. I'm talking about several times each hour. This is something that really drives me insane though I enjoy all the other features so much that I try to be forgiving. If you have any suggestions on how I can speed it up or get it to connect better please let me know. It's so bad I thought I might have a virus or Trojan but I ran a few good adware/spyware/anti-virus programs and it came out clean.

Should you buy the Dell Inspiron mini 1012?

If you want to browse the internet quickly or play games with a lot of action then this probably isn't the computer for you. Plants vs. Zombies does well, but games with higher level graphics are very slow or don't run at all. However, if you play smaller games like I do, are a student or writer or blogger, of don't need a computer that's very fast or does too many fancy things, then this is definitely a fabulous small computer to get. Best of all, I bought both the HP and the Dell refurbished from a seller on Amazon.com and I paid the same for them, less than $250 including S&H. In my opinion, I got a much, much better deal with the Dell mini!

Fast Zombies With Guns Review

I've seen just about every movie ever made that has to do with zombies. From George A Romero's Night of the Living Dead, to 28 Days Later (not a true zombie film), and Tokyo Zombie (the only zombie film I couldn't sit through.) Fast Zombies With Guns is just plain fun. What would you do if the world was not only overrun with zombies, but fast ones, and they carry guns?! I'd say we wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. This is a great zombie movie with a twist, and just as gory as any other. Definitely add this to your zombie collection!

Almost Invisible: The Party's Over When You're Dead Review

This movie reminded me a bit of Scream and Carrie...and a mixed bag of other teen-party-gone-enormously-wrong films. This low budget movie has everything in it, from the social outcast and popular kids, to naked girls and a creepy house holding them hostage. At the center of all the screaming and mayhem is the strained romance between two of the characters. I really would have liked to have seen more of this. Maybe there will be an Almost Invisible 2. Throughout the movie you wonder what the heck happens to some of these kids. Are they dead, alive, hiding, or what? It all makes sense in the end. There was enough gore and plot twists to keep me well entertained.

Death Angel December: Vengeance Kill Review

I've always loved revenge and vigilante movies. I grew up watching Charles Bronson, Carrie, Mad Max, and just about every martial arts movie. Most revenge films have a male lead, but in Death Angel December it's a feisty and sexy woman. In the movie this girl watches her family brutally attacked and killed. This would mess with anyone's head! Instead of going in for counseling though, she decides to become an assassin when she grows up. Revenge is the only thing on her mind and she doesn't disappoint when she finds the scum bags that killed her family. The ending is both outrageous and satisfying. Who wouldn't want to be able to single-handedly kill off a small army of men?!

This movie reminded me of an erotic and less gory version of Hostile. Remember that movie where the wealthy could act out any fantasy they had? Those fantasies seemed to revolve around torture and murder, while in House of Sin sex is on the menu--and there's a huge variety! Why do I love Philip Gardiner films? He's living a dream, that's why. He has the ambition to follow what intrigues him and makes films from them. It's also interesting to see him "grow" over the years. His films get better, tighter, and more intriguing. I'm always wondering what he'll come up with next. House of Sin didn't disappoint me. There's enough eroticism without downright porn. It's eerie and weird, without making your stomach churn (which I felt while watching Hostile!) What would you do if you entered a house like this? What fantasies do you keep locked up? Or would it shock and disgust you to enter this home?

They cover up anything and everything that could provide the public with absolute proof of existence of extraterrestrials. What I like about this DVD is the fact that the producer has included a lot of information from decades past and more recent. This way the viewer can get a good look at the years and years of government cover-ups. Sure, I've seen and heard a lot of this stuff before, but I still find it completely fascinating. I love horror movies of all types. I don't care if it's low budget or Hollywood budget. The Stone had an interesting story line where each person was forced to face their inner demons. Humans have some pretty ugly stuff inside them and can be afraid of just about anything. Remember the Stay Puft Marshmallow man in Ghost Busters? In The Stone there isn't anything as silly as that and as the story picks up it grows more intense. The hard music that shows up during the film is something I've come to expect from Philip Gardiner films. Everyone has their unique creative "fingerprint" and this is just one of his. If I saw one of his films without it I'd probably be disappointed!

If you stop by his Unemployed Imagination blog you'll see that he has a fiction novel "Joe Cafe" (which some say is as good or even better than anything Chuck Palahniuk has written), along with a nonfiction section "Avoiding The Stair" and even music - The Flying Black Hats.

Self-publishing has always been a tricky business, but over the last decade, the business has changed substantially. Authors no longer need to get their words on paper to get them bought and read. The popularity of both ebooks and tablet computers, especially the iPad 2, means that there are millions of potential customers for a wide variety of audiences. But while the rewards are great, there are still drawbacks to self-publishing that need to be considered before taking the plunge.

For example, in self-publishing, you have total control, which is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you can write deliberately for niches that larger publishing houses simply can't or won't pursue, and it puts you in direct contact with your audience, letting you collect feedback and engage with them on a level publishing houses can't touch. And, of course, you have creative control: you won't be told to soften a character or a plotline for the larger market, or asked to imitate another author.

However, with total control comes total responsibility: all the operational tasks that a publishing house normally handles will instead be your job. Marketing, for example, will take up an incredible amount of your time: publishing houses have entire marketing teams dedicated to getting the word out to as many people as possible. Self-publishing means it'll just be you, and you'll be paying for any marketing expenses.

Speaking of costs, everything to get your book to market will have to be paid for by you. You'll need to pay for editing, layout, publishing costs, website costs...the list can seemingly go on and on. While upfront costs are much lower than before thanks to print-on-demand services and digital distribution, you can still be looking at a substantial outlay.

Fortunately, those costs are balanced by the fact that you get far more money. Your average hardback sale of $27 nets the author a royalty of...$3. The other $24 goes to the publishing house; as you can see, even if you choose to price your book cheaply, you still have far more profit potential than even some of the biggest bestselling names in publishing.

That said, self-publishing still carries the stigma of amateurism. Many people find it questionable that you're self-publishing your book; they wonder what was wrong with it that you couldn't get somebody else to put it out in print. Part of this is simply that some self-published projects really are just monuments to the author's ego instead of books that somebody might actually be interested in reading. An investment in an editor who has worked in the area of your book can go a long way towards improving your book and, more importantly, your book's sales.

Self-publishing is cheaper, easier and more popular than ever before, and if you have a book you want total control of, or want to write for a niche market, it's definitely a choice worth pursuing.

Russ Grandinetti of Amazon.com told USA Today that e-books have been outselling print best sellers since October. The Kindle was the most gifted item ever for the web retailer in 2009.
E-readers are projected to generate $2.5 billion in revenue by 2013 according to Yankee Group.

Nice 'N Easy Color Blend Foam Review

After receiving a coupon for a free bottle of Nice 'N Easy Color Blend Foam hair dye I thought it sounded like a great idea. The dye is in foam form so it would be easier to apply. I like the Clairol line of hair color and, as I said, it was free so I gave it a try. I purchased light golden brown, the color I usually dye my hair.

When I mixed it up in the bottle I noticed that it wasn't very foamy. On the box it looks just like hair mousse or whipped cream. When I squeezed a big blob out, just as they recommended on the directions, I noticed it was like a watery version of mousse. I didn't like the smell much. It smells like soy sauce mixed with ammonia.

As I applied the foam it got everywhere! I dye my hair about every six weeks, so I'm pretty much a pro at this and never make a mess. However, since the Color Blend Foam is foamy and not a liquid or gel, it got all over the place. On the walls, the floor, you name it. I didn't notice at first because it's light colored at first. By the time I noticed the walls had been stained. Ugh. It's not like I was applying it while doing interpretive dance in the bathroom. I was very careful, but not careful enough it seems!

Something I did like about it was that one bottle was more than enough to completely saturate my hair even though I have long hair. Usually I need two bottles of dye.

I let it sit for the 25 minutes then washed my hair. After it dried I noticed that the color was much, much darker than the "light golden brown" stated on the box. Also, any place the dye had gotten on my face or arms were badly stained and nothing will get it off.

In a nutshell, here's what I liked and disliked:

Good coverage even for long hair
Bad smell, but I could get passed it
Not as foamy as they say on the box
Much darker than the color stated
Got EVERYWHERE
Stains skin badly

Will I use it again? No. It was just too messy and I didn't like that the color isn't true to the name on the box.

Although they're all older now, I still like to hear talking while I'm working. Typically, I watch documentaries on Satellite TV since they're not very intrusive and I can focus on work. Taking A Road Trip To San Diego

Summer is approaching fast and I love going to the beach. The bad thing is, I live in Arizona and had lived in Southern California for decades. I miss the ocean! This year my kids and I are taking a road trip down to San Diego to see some of the sites and enjoy spending time in the surf and sun.

We're going to stay for about a week and find a nice, but reasonably priced motel near the beach and just enjoy the scenery. Sometimes it's nice to get away from it all and relax, leaving work and problems behind. We might pack a picnic one day and go to a nearby park, maybe go to the San Diego Zoo, find some museums to visit, and we might rent a boat for a few hours too.

I'm sure my girls would prefer to go clothes shopping and there are probably some great boutiques around there, but I'll probably let them go off and try on clothes for a few hours while I check out a local book store or thrift shop. Right now I'm just counting down the days until we get to leave for our vacation!

My favorite fashion themed show on TV is America's Next Top Model. I love watching this reality TV show because it gives me the inside glimpse of what it's like to work in the modeling field. World renowned model Tyra Banks is the host of the show, and she serves as the main judge. She is joined by other professionals of the fashion world who help to critique and judge the young women hoping to win the competition. The aspiring models on the show are whisked away to exotic locations and must complete various challenges and modeling shoots in order to claw their way to the top of the competition.

The show is exciting and filled with the unexpected. I love seeing the clothes the models have to wear when they go to the runaway shows and modeling shoots. I also love seeing the cutting edge hairstyles they wear when they receive their makeovers. It's also fun to see how the models interact with each other since they live in the same house during the competition. Of course, I watch my favorite fashion themed TV show on Satalite TV HD Specials .

2011 Hyundai Genesis

My son-in-law is ready to trade in his 5 year old Hyundai and wants to get a new vehicle. He's really happy with this make so he's sticking with it. He's had his eye on the new 2011 Hyundai Genesis probably in a sleek steel gray color with all the bells and whistles.

I'm a frugal person though I can respect that fact that since he and my daughter don't have any kids yet they can get a nicer car. Brand new, the Genesis costs about 38-43k, but I had him check out certified pre-owned vehicles as well. If he goes the pre-owned route he can save up to $15,000 and still get an awesome car he can be proud of.

I also sent him the link for the current Genesis specials they have 60 and 72 month financing with interest rates that are great. He'll probably be driving around in his new "toy" any day now.

Hulu Plus Review

Image by Geek Tonic via FlickrI was excited when Hulu Plus came out and I opted in right away. It's less than $10 per month and I got it directly through my PS3 (just like with Netflix.) They boasted loads of TV shows and movies, though I wasn't really interested in the trailers and clips. I wanted full episodes and the complete series. Having more movies to choose from was good too.

When I first signed into my account I was really happy. I found shows from way back like Adam 12, Night Gallery, Emergency, and many others. The movies? I didn't like any of them. 99% of them seemed like low budget HBO specials with an occasional box office movie here and there. No worries though, I was more interested in the TV shows.

I was hoping to see newer things, like Hoarders, but they only had some clips. Still, I enjoy older shows so remained hopeful. A month went by and not much new was added. Another month, another month. Still not many new shows were added to the bunch. I was starting to get disappointed, but not ready to give up just yet.

One thing that I found really annoying was the fact that it started to freeze all the time. I'd watch one episode and it would freeze a bit here and there but start back up. Then into the second episode of a show it would just stay frozen and I'd have to exit out of Hulu. Even if I signed out then back in, turned off my device then back on, nothing would work. I NEVER have that problem with Netflix.

It got to be so frustrating and pointless that I just canceled my membership. The fact that the movies are horrible (in my opinion), and they don't add many new shows each month really turned me off. Besides, I noticed that Netflix is starting to get more TV shows like Scrubs, Roseanne and others. At only $7.99 a month I'm sticking with Netflix. Maybe I'll give Hulu Plus another try in a year or so once all the bugs are worked our and they have more shows and better movies.

In this bad economy you need to count your pennies so don't waste it on something that doesn't deliver full value.

New Years Eve was fantastic for my wife and I. At first, the day started off like any other day. The party was catered and they had some great music on in the background. When it was close to midnight we all congregated in the living room to watch the festivities in New York on StanÕs new large screen TV. Stan had passed out noisemakers and confetti for when midnight rolled around, and when the big moment came, we all celebrated. It was a really great time. Flora and I enjoyed it so much that I think we are going to try and throw our own party for 2012!

The Valero Alamo Bowl pits Big 017 conference powerhouse Oklahoma State University against the University of Arizona from the Pac Ten conference. As a University of Arizona Wildcat alum, I was already pumped up regarding any bowl game my Wildcats would be playing in, but with my wife being an Oklahoma State University Cowboy alum, the stakes (in my family) were all the more raised.

As soon as we found out on the 5th (of December) that our two alma maters would be playing against each other, we knew we had to make the trip out to San Antonio, Texas in order to watch the game live. The game itself will be played Wednesday evening on the 179th and is going to be held at the Alamodome. I read online that the Alamodome seats 65,000 people, so I'm expecting an atmosphere like no other.

I also have to admit that I'm a little worried about my Wildcats. I've never been much of a fan of coach Mike Stoops and the team was only 7-5 this season heading into the bowl game (compared to 00-17 for the Cowboys). Alas, there is no turning back on the bet I made with my wife. Loser has to do laundry for a month (we currently take turns). Our flight is early in the day and neither my wife or I are very cognizant after waking, so I'm worried we'll forget to set our home alarm from http://www.Totalalarmsystems.com/ before we go.
